Classmates, I wrote to Worth Camp to ask how had Lacey passed if he knew. He is the man who worked with Lacey on the old map of El Do. I received a reply this morning and another version of the map. I don’t know if it is the same as the last one Lacey sent me or not but it is the latest and he wanted us to have it. It is attached. Here is what Worth said:
His wife Kaye says he laid down to take a nap in the afternoon and did not wake up.
Attached is copy of Lacey’s redraft of an old surveyor’s map, Mr. Jackson 1896.
Lacey and I often exchanged stories of our memories of growing up in El Do. I will really miss that.
Here is the last one he sent me on Dec 28 in response to getting the picture of the old viaduct. He passed 6 days later.
The 1935 Hillsboro Viaduct made an impression on all who passed over it. There is no such landmark in Southern Arkansas. About 1959 Joe Eddie McHenry [1942-1996] went over the Viaduct with the police after him. He was driving his car called the legendary "Plowmule" [about a 1948 Plymouth with a 383 Chrysler engine]. Somewhere east of town he went off the highway and police finally got him. My parents were heading west on the Viaduct one night and nearing the traffic light on Washington Street. They suffered whiplash and had to go the chiropractor [Dr. Swain] for several years. My father when passing over the viaduct would look at birds on the power lines above and wonder if they could predict the weather. At the picture indicates, Christmas decorations on the viaduct made it a part of everyone's Christmas.
Be sure to send a card or sign the funeral home Guest Book. I think it will comfort the family to know how much we cared for Lacey. Their address is 3617 Berrywood Circle in Garland, TX 75040-3573.
Kindest regards,
Betty Reynolds Rogers
