Name: Ernest R. Tousignant Website: Onboard: 65 to 68 From: Townsend, MA Time: 1998-09-12 23:08:57 Comments: I was surprised to find this site and hope that in the future it might help find me some old friends from the past. I was on the Steamer from 65-68, Plank Owner, Comissioning detail, Sonarman 3rd, was the CO's driver for Captains CF Moul and CE Swallow. We had the best in sonar & radar, took her through her shakedown cruise, speed trials, gunnery and missle practice perfecting the handshake operations with the computer control. I've been as far down as you could go in the Sonar dome, (Ugh, you can't believe what we found) and as high on the Spa-48 unit, (what a view). Everyone took great pride in this jewel of the fleet and after all, she was Flagship for ComDesRon 8. We had man overboard drills and one scheduled drill turned out to be real. Thank God for that individual it was a great day. One thing for sure he apparently found out the power of the Sonar transmission, which we realized needs to be shut down in these situations. Some of the port of calls during this time were, St Thomas, St Croix, San Juan, Bermuda, Azores, Malta, Palma, The Med,( home port of Naples), Scicily, Suda Bay Crete plus a number of others. If any of you ever hear of or from individuals as John Rydel, J. Sloccum, D. Gordon, J. Spinelli, Cheif Athenos, T Childress, Radcliff, MM-Gatowski(SKI) to name a few, drop me a line. I hope many of you enjoyed your stay on her as I did. I was surprised to hear she was decom'd. Too Bad. If there are plans for a reunion, please let me know. |

Name: Bob Voronovitch Website: Onboard: 66 to 70 From: Manchester Connecticut Time: 1999-01-25 16:30:56 Comments: * * PLANK OWNER * * I first boarded the Standley in May of 1966 as a green FTM3 fresh out of "C" school. As a member of the nucleus crew when she was still in the shipyard in Bath Maine everything about her was new and exciting. It was a real adventure to take her through final outfitting and her first trip down the Kennebec River to the open ocean for sea trials and eventually to Boston for her Commissioning. I was there for a great many of her "firsts". The four years that I was a part of the Standley were a large part of my life and I will remember them fondly forever. We all worked hard to make her the best at whatever she did. The hardest that I ever worked in my life was during her first Westpac deployment in 1969. My junior petty officers and I spent many long nights on Yankee Station keeping the 3-D radar up and running so that the ship and crew were safe from air attack. The sea snakes in the Tonkin Gulf were among the many attractions that I never want to see or have to shoot at again. I'm forever grateful that I didn't have to carry an M1 into battle (they jammed way too often). Tying up next to the New Jersey in Da Nang was also a big thrill. Regret never seeing those 16 inchers fire. Honk Kong and Japan were great ports of call. The fantail coke can skeet club was also a blast. The saddest time was looking for the Scorpion. I do think that we set a transatlantic crossing record when we left port in the US to search for her in the Azores. In case any old 3-D radar guys are out there, I'd like to tell you about how much is cost to put that two drawer cabinet in place just inside the radar room on the right. It was a four-drawer cut down to two because a four would have been too tall. My only real regret was missing her decommissioning. And of course missing my "plank". They tell me that steel ships don't have any planks for the plank owners. It would have been nice to have something to remember her by. |
Name: Tom Fanniff Website: Onboard: 67 to ?? From: Colonie,NY Time: 1998-10-16 23:11:53 Comments: Hey all, I was shocked today when I met a man walking at me with the William H Standley Coat of Arms on his jacket. A name I haven't seen in 31 yrs. His Name I believe was Bill ? Starr(plankholder). He told me about this site. I was on the Standley during 1967 for its 1st birthday and recall having some photos of the "Ship's Holiday" activites on the fantail on the way back from the Canaries. If I run across them I'll try to get them scanned and sent here. I,m Fanniff TJ EM3 |

I was assigned to E-Division as an Electrician's Mate 2nd Class. Was Shellback, Megellan, and member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club. Gunner Mitchell contacted by phone and we talked over the old ship. I spotted our trident patch on Tom Cruises jacket years ago and reminded Gunner about it and he did the rest. Since the Navy, I have served with the US Army and the NC National Guard. Besides the Vietnam days (two Westpac Cruises), I became a veteran of Desert Shield/Storm when my National Guard MP Unit was mobilized and assigned to the 101st ABN Division. A member of our company was featured on the cover of either Time or Newsweek processing a Republican Guard soldier in Iraq. Good seeing the pics and hearing everyone's comments. Have since retired from the accumulated 21 years of Mil Svc and work as a criminal investigator for Murphy NC PD. I am especially greatful to Gunner Mitchell for calling......... Name: Dan Cooksey Website: Onboard: 69 to 72 From: Cincinnati, Ohio Time: 1998-06-21 20:24:40 Comments: I was privileged to be on the Standley from June, 1969 until March 1972. For the first year and a half I was the gunnery officer under Captain Green. Shortly before he left, he asked me to be the Navigator. I served as Navigator under Captain Blanks for the last 2 plus years. My whole time in the Navy was on the Standley. After the Navy, I returned to the University of Tennessee to get my MBA and then went to work for Procter & Gamble. After 25 years at P&G, I'm looking forward to retirement in about 2 years. At that time, Betty and I plan to go into full-time ministry at our church. We're currently ordained and licensed pastors at a Vineyard Church in Milford, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. We've been married over 31 years and are blessed with two grown sons and two wonderful daughters-in-law. No grandchildren yet, but we're hopeful. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be at the fall reunion because of my father's illness this year. He died several months ago, but his illness prior to his death took all of our vacation time for this year. To Gunner, I appreciate all you do to keep the relationships alive and to enlarge them as you find other shipmates. My time on the Standley was among the best years of my life. I always tell people that if I had not been married, I would have stayed in and made the Navy a career. I loved going to sea on the Standley. Best regards to all who read this. Dan Cooksey, LT, USNR, 1969 - 1972 |

Name: WOODS HUFF Website: Onboard: 70 to 72 From: Washington, Georgia Time: 1998-12-10 16:22:51 Comments: WOODS HUFF - YN3 - ADMIN DEPT - DEC 70 TO APR 72 Well let's see; during the 71 Cruise Around The Big Pond, I worked in the Ship's Ofiice as Legal YN - yep! - that was me - always at Capt Mast. Then during Sea and Anchor detail, I was the guy on the bridge plotting contacts (from the lookouts) on the grease board for the Capt. At night in the combat zone, ocassionaly I stood watch in CIC monitoring aircraft fuel load repports. If that doesn't sound familiar - try this - I was the fellow running thru the galley during the movie trying to find the XO (to sign the Plan Of Day). Anyway - I have some pretty decent pictures from the 71 cruise and will get them sent to the Captain soon, so hopefuly they can be put in the gallery. I can't say that I have done anything quite as extraordinary as circumnavigating the world since I left the service in 72. I now live in a small North Georgia town working as an EMT and a Vol Firefighter - my wife and I are both working on a degree in Nursing and should graduate as the oldest in our Class of Y2K. Oh; by the way - would like to apologize for any errors in your service records when you left the Standley - I did however use the GI bill to take a typing course at a local Community Collage when I got out! |

It was the only assignment that caused me to have glassy eyes as I crossed the brow for the last time. I felt then, and still believe, that on DLG-32 I served with the finest enlisted men and officers ever assembled. I tip my hat to Capt. Palkovic, with whom I had served some 10 years earlier when he was XO of the USS Fechteler (DDR-870). Smooth sailing to all of you that gave so much of yourselves while serving on board the Willie H. |

Name: Reed R. Radcliffe, DSC, Retired Website: Fox Ridge Estates ![]() Onboard: 77 to 78 From: St. Louis, Missouri Time: 1998-10-28 19:48:39 Comments: CG32 was my first command (after boot camp), I was only there for a year or so because I joined the Navy with a guarantee for RM "A" school after a year in the fleet. So you all know what I did on the William H. Standley - I was a deck ape! My first day I "frapped the lines," second, ruined my first pair of dungarees on a stage over the side, painting haze gray on the port side fo'c'sle. Finally, they let me join the Radiomen and shortly thereafter I left for "A" school and was never to return except as a visitor. I wanted to come back, but the USS Chicago (CG11) needed me worse, I guess! |

As ETN2 Henry, I worked in OE Division under ETC Wolf and along side ETN2 Richard Grimes, ETN2 Denny Eatherton, ETR2 George Withers, ETR2 George Boyeas. I came on board during the Steamer's last Med cruise. Upon returning from the Med she left her homeport of Charleston SC and headed for Bremerton WA NSY. After close to a year in the yards, she came down to San Diego as her final homeport. ETR2 Boyeas and I turned in our uniforms for civies on the same day in August of '79 wearing our custom made T-shirts. "TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT" on the front and "UNEMPLOYED" on the back. The Steamer was a great ship. Capt. Morton E. Toole left for VA and made Admiral. I've been a government contractor since leaving the Navy thus continuing to support the fleet. I was working alongside the Standley when she was towed away for scrap. Sad day indeed. Through your work here Gunner, I've been back in touch with EW1 Scott Batchelder. Thanks Jerry |

Name: Dave Schultz Website: Resume of David A. Schultz ![]() From: Louisiana (now living in Georgia) Time: 1998-09-11 01:27:26 Comments: I got my sea legs T.A.D. on the WHS in August 1981. I was a CTM2 maintaining the AN/SSQ-80 system and working with the OUTBOARD crew (spooks). I was stationed at Naval Security Group Detachment (NSGD) Subic Bay and boarded the Standley when it came over to Subic on WESTPAC. One of the things the ship did during our deployment was to go right off the coast of Petropavlosk, Russia. We were tailed by a Russian Krivak and watched by Soviet Bears constantly. When WHS finally turned around to leave the Russian area and the Krivak turned around to go home, the Standley's captain pulled up alongside the Russian ship. A shot line was fired over to the Russian ship, and our captain sent across a bag containing (as I recall) a box of cigars, a tourist's map of San Diego, a WHS ballcap, and a Playboy magazine! Unfortunately I did not keep a diary. If anyone knows details of what happened and when on that WESTPAC, I would love to hear from you. By the way, I left the Navy when my six years were up in 1984. I am now a Software Engineer in Kennesaw, Georgia. I married a Filipina in Subic, but we just got divorced after 16 years of marriage. We have two wonderful daughters. |

We went through a short overhaul and then sea trials. After Sea Trials we went to San Fransisco for Fleet Week as the lead ship. What a great crew and a great time. Of my four and one half years of Sea Duty this was one of the greatest ships I have ever served on. I saw her decommisioning, a tragic day for me, shortly after we returned from San Fransisco. They just don't make ships like that any more. Gas Turbines Suck!!! |
Name: Sara L. Standley Website: Onboard: Never From: Time: 1998-08-28 14:33:44 Comments: Hi Gunner! I'm doing again to see if it works. I have a sea story. I was at the Hotel Del Coronado about two months ago meeting some friends for lunch. They have some very spiffy shops at the Del and one in particular that I like is across from the restaurant where we were meeting. They have very trendy, upscale clothes for women. One item was an aviator style leather jacket with patches all over it like in wartime. The big patch on the front was of the Standley. I couldn't believe. I asked the sales person if the Standley patch was just on that jacket (thinking they were each individually made). She said that the Standley patch was on all of their jackets. So, I decided that I was going to buy it...figuring I would go as high as $250.00, but it was $450.00 so I said I don't think so. But I want you guys to know that you have made it into the world of very high couture. Sara |
