One of the things the ship did during our deployment was to go right off the coast of Petropavlosk, Russia. We were tailed by a Russian Krivak and watched by Soviet Bears constantly. When WHS finally turned around to leave the Russian area and the Krivak turned around to go home, the Standley's Captain (Capt. Timothy R. O'Keefe) pulled up alongside the Russian ship. A shot line was fired over to the Russian ship, and our captain sent across a bag containing (as I recall) a box of cigars, a tourist's map of San Diego, a WHS ballcap, and a Playboy magazine!
