Biography
Helen Dominic Bossier Becnel, 92, died peacefully in her sleep in her home in Texas City on Saturday January 24, 2009, following a bout with pneumonia.

She was born in Gramercy, LA on August 4, 1916. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Colonel Lawrence F. (Bec) Becnel Sr, her parents Joseph A. Bossier Sr. and Ida F. Bossier, her sister Ida B. Steib, her brothers Joseph A. (Bubby) Bossier Jr. and Leo T. Bossier and her great-grandson Joshua Michael Burchfield.

She is survived by her 10 children: Lawrence F. (Bec) Becnel Jr. and wife Mary Alice of Sugar Land, TX, Helen Burchfield and husband Kenneth of Tomball, TX, Kitty Brown and husband Jim of Farmerville, LA, Priscilla Chauvin and husband John of Houston, TX, Jeanie Austin and husband Bruce of Texas City, TX, David Becnel and wife Linda of Fulshear, TX, Timothy Becnel and wife Karen of Covington, LA, John Becnel and wife Patty of Ogden UT, Joseph Becnel and wife Dennise of Nederland TX and Peter Becnel and wife Lynne of League City TX. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren; 3 sisters, Ester B. Olivier of Gramercy LA, Marie Foret and husband Lynn of Lake Charles, LA and Evelyn LeBlanc of Norco, LA and one brother-in-law Albert T. Becnel of Reserve, LA; many, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and her loving dog Wolfie.

Our mother was a 40-year member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, formerly taught RCIA and was a member of the Ladies Altar Society-St.Anne’s group. She served several years in the Latch Key Program for children at St. George’s Episcopal Church. She attended daily Mass and communion for many years until she was unable to do so because of declining health. She was a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, LA and taught elementary school in Vacherie, LA in the 1930’s in a 1-room school house. She also taught for a short time at Holy Redeemer Catholic School in El Dorado, Arkansas. The remainder of her life was spent in caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, family friends, and anyone she had the opportunity to care for. Her home and her heart were always filled with people, good cooking, and loads of love.
