Local attorney to run for district judgeship

Local attorney Ron Griggs has announced his intention to seek the position of Union County District Judge.

Griggs grew up in El Dorado and graduated from El Dorado High School. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam Conflict, both in the Republic of the Philippines and later aboard ship in the Pacific Fleet.

After his military service, he attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1972, and was then admitted to the Arkansas Bar.

Griggs is a past president of the Union County Bar Association and he served the community as the juvenile judge for Union County from 1978 to 1980. He is a member of the Arkansas Bar Association and a fellow of the Arkansas Bar Foundation.

Griggs is past president of the El Dorado Civitan Club and has practiced continuously for more than 35 years in El Dorado and Union County.

Griggs said he has a desire to serve Union County as district judge after his many years of practicing law within the 13th Judicial District. The election will be held May 20.

"These are exciting times in this community and I believe we need a change to bring a fresh approach to the administration of justice within the District Court. The community has been very good to me and I am now asking to give back to the community in service as district judge. The district judge is responsible for the administration and allocation of almost $400,000 annually. As district judge, I pledge to be accountable to the citizens and taxpayers for all those monies spent. "

"I pledge to be flexible in the scheduling of court appearances to accommodate the witnesses and their employers, law enforcement, as well as all other persons who appear before the court."

The Supreme Court o Arkansas in its Administrative Order No. 18, expanded the jurisdiction of the Union County District Court. With the expanded jurisdiction o the district court comes more responsibilities. This new position requires a full time judge.

"More citizens will have contact with the district court than the circuit courts. The responsibility of the district judge is to make certain that all who have business in his court are treated fairly and according to law. When elected, I pledge to do just that, Griggs said.
