Biography:
After graduating from EHS: Attended Centenary College for 2 years on a music scholarship to sing with the choir; Met my future wife, Cynthia Bailey, who also sang in the choir; Moved to the Dallas area in ’64, went to work as an accounting clerk for a gas company, and also married Cindy that same year. Cindy completed her degree at North Texas State and began her teaching career as an elementary music teacher in ’66. I finished my undergraduate studies at North Texas State in ’68; In the fall of ’68, we became home missionaries for 2 years and were sent to a small community (Dungannon), located in the mountains of southwest Virginia, under the auspices of the Southern Baptist Convention. While there, our 1st son (Tim) was born in ’69; After leaving the program I got a job teaching in the county system for 3 years. We moved to a neighboring community (Nickelsville) within the same county, and we remain here to this day. Our 2nd son (Jon) was born in ’74. Upon completion of 3 years of teaching, I moved into an administration position for a federal program which lasted 10 years. During the early years at this position, I completed a master’s degree from Virginia Tech. I then became a principal at the elementary level which lasted 17 years, and retired after 30 years of service in 2000. Cindy stayed at home raising our 2 boys until the youngest began 8th grade. She then taught music in the county for 13 years before retiring in 2000. Since our retirement: I have driven an activities bus (field trips and sports related trips), and Cindy has taught private piano lessons. We have been involved in our local community as members of a senior citizens group, and as a member of the Town Council. I took up the game of golf in 2008 and play with Tim and Jon whenever possible and with a group of guys from our church. We attend a non-denominational church which blesses us, and, hopefully we are a blessing to the folks that we come in contact with. Our children: Tim and Kaye’s family live in Smithfield, VA. and Tim works as a control room supervisor at a nuclear power plant in Surry, VA. Kaye manages the accounting records for a real estate company. Ethan is in the 4th grade and Emily is in the 1st grade; Jon and Donna’s family live in Franklin, TN. and Jon works at the Nissan headquarters. Donna is able to work at home as a vendor for a company located in N.J., and she travels quite a bit buying goods to be sold to retail stores. Abby is in the 2nd grade, Kate is in pre-k, and Sarah is almost 2. We have been blessed by the Lord with wonderful children and grandchildren. Cindy and I have been married 47 years, and it only gets better! We plan to grow older together!
